A Note from David Maddox, J.D., President of Hi-5 ABA
The Chinese symbol for “crisis” is a combination of two words–“danger” and “opportunity.” We’ve suffered a health and economic crisis for several months now, with more trouble and uncertainty ahead. Much conversation centers on various dangers, but let’s not neglect the inherent opportunities–opportunities which cannot only mitigate dangers, but also potentially leap-frog the chaos into a better situation than existed before the crisis.
The ABA industry has long faced an environment where demand for services far exceeds supply. University ABA programs are minting new analysts at a rapid pace, but we’re still many years away from having enough. More challenging than finding analysts, however, has been recruiting and training enough technicians in a red-hot economy with real unemployment rates well below 4% in most U.S. communities.As America goes back to work, many will resume former positions or find work in familiar fields. The dislocation of many others, however, will provide them opportunities to consider new career options, and will provide ABA practices the opportunity to hire and train new people.

Building an ABA practice is mostly about personnel–recruiting, training, and team-building. Growing staff in a near-zero-unemployment environment is challenging. That’s what the ABA industry has faced for the past several years. We’ve still grown substantially. But the present situation is reshuffling the deck for a lot of folks. Those ready, willing and able to grow ABA practices today place themselves in historically extraordinary positions for prospective short- and medium-term success.
